Ryder System Sued Over COBRA Health Notices Sent to Ex-Workers

Ryder System Inc. was sued Thursday in Miami federal court by the husband of a one-time employee who says the transportation company sends legally insufficient COBRA notices informing former workers of their right to keep their company-provided health coverage.

Rather than sending employees the Labor Department’s model COBRA notice, Ryder opted to break the notice into multiple, separately-mailed documents that contained only “bits and pieces” of the information required by law, plaintiff James Thompson III said in a proposed class action complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
