Republicans Investigating Certain CalPERS Investments Over ESG

House Republicans are probing California’s public employee pension over whether it prioritized environmental, social, and governance factors in investments, suggesting it could threaten the fund’s tax status.

House Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg (R-Mich.), Rep. Rick Allen (R-Ga.), and Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-Calif.) wroteon Thursday to the head of the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) seeking information about the fund’s investments in a clean energy and technology fund.

The committee has been investigating CalPERS since July 2024 over allegations the pension was not acting for the “exclusive benefit” of California public employees and retirees.
