Puerto Rico Catholic Church Loses Bid to Stay Pension Dispute

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Juan, P.R., lost its bid to have the U.S. Supreme Court pause a local court order to seize $4.7 million of its assets across the island to cover the pension benefits of Catholic school teachers.

Justice Stephen Breyer June 21 denied the archdiocese’s application for a stay pending the filing and disposition of its request to review the case. Breyer didn’t explain his reasons to deny the application.

The archdiocese, however, renewed June 22 its application for a stay, which will be decided by Justice Samuel Alito.
