As the tax filing season is set to begin Jan. 30, many tax preparers said they had no idea whether they were supposed to get or use a preparer tax identification number when filing their clients’ tax returns for the 2013 tax filing season.
With a federal court injunction hanging over the Internal Revenue Service tax preparer registration program, the Service Jan. 29 updated its Tax Professionals webpage, telling preparers that the Service would shortly provide additional information on how to obtain preparer tax identification numbers (PTINs), which identify the preparers to IRS.
