PPG Prevails in Retiree Life Insurance Trial Following Remand

PPG Industries Inc. defeated a 500-person class action by former employees who said their retiree life insurance coverage was improperly terminated in connection with a 2013 corporate transaction.

The retirees didn’t show that they had a vested interest in continued life insurance coverage from the company, Judge Gina M. Groh ruled for the US District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia. The relevant insurance booklets and plan documents had no language clearly and expressly promising a vested right to benefits, Groh said in an Aug. 8 opinion after a two-day bench trial.
