Owens & Minor Sues Anthem for Claims Mishandling, Self-Dealing

Health-care logistics company Owens & Minor Inc. filed a new lawsuit accusing Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield of mismanaging its employees’ health plan by overpaying for claims, securing kickbacks, and improperly pocketing rebates.

Anthem treated Owens’ health plan as an opportunity to enrich itself and medical providers by increasing the cost of plan administration in an effort to boost its profits, Owens said in the lawsuit. Anthem also frustrated the company’s attempt to monitor the plan’s expenses by blocking its efforts to access claims data, according to the complaint.
