Obamacare Tax Credits Allowed With Medicaid-Covered Covid Tests

Uninsured people who receive Medicaid coverage for Covid-19 testing will still be eligible for premium tax credits if they buy an Obamacare health plan, the Internal Revenue Service said Wednesday.

IRS Notice 2020-66 is designed to direct uninsured patients seeking Covid-19 testing to opportunities for insurance coverage, according to MaryBeth Musumeci, associate director of the Kaiser Family Foundation’s program on Medicaid and the uninsured.

Patients are sometimes identified as eligible for subsidized Obamacare coverage during an encounter with a health care provider, she said. Covid-19 testing is a good opportunity to point people lacking insurance to coverage opportunities.
