NFL Beats Medical Clinic’s Suit Over Care for Retired Players

The National Football League defeated a lawsuit by an Illinois medical clinic that accused the league of wrongly refusing to cover retired players’ medical bills, when a federal judge in Texas ruled Friday that the clinic’s economic interference claim was preempted by federal law.

Advanced Physicians SC’s state law claim of interference with economic advantage is preempted by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act, Senior Judge A. Joe Fish of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas held, granting the NFL’s motion to dismiss.
