IRS Readies Guidance on Retirement-Related Student Loan Relief

Formal guidance regarding student loan repayment programs tied to employer-sponsored retirement plans is on the way, an IRS official alerted practitioners on May 10.

Stephen Tackney, deputy associate chief counsel for employee benefits, told attendees at the American Bar Association’s tax section meeting in Washington that his division is working on a guidance project to answer the multitude of questions that have poured in since one company scored a private letter ruling approving its unique arrangement.
