Facebook Travel, Catering Posts Defeat Nurse’s Disability Bid

Unum Life Insurance Co. of America properly ended the disability benefits of a nurse whose social media activity depicted her traveling to the US Virgin Islands and running a catering business, the Eleventh Circuit ruled.

Unum reasonably concluded that the nurse was no longer disabled based on medical records, expert opinions, and the nurse’s own social media activity, the US Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit said Wednesday. The nurse’s medical providers said she was unable to work, but Unum’s hired experts validly determined that these claims weren’t supported by her medical records, according to the unpublished opinion. ...
