Ex-Judge, Convicted of Lying to FBI, Forfeits State Pension

A former municipal court judge in Philadelphia forfeited his state pension when he pleaded guilty to federal counts of making false statements to law enforcement, the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania ruled.

The federal crime that Joseph O’Neill pleaded guilty to is “substantially the same as” a state law crime that results in pension forfeiture when done in connection with public office, the court said Monday. O’Neill therefore forfeited his state pension and can receive only a refund of the money he contributed into the State Employees’ Retirement System, without interest, the court said.
