Doctor With Leukemia Settles Disability Suit Over Covid Risk (1)

An anesthesiologist with leukemia who sued Unum Group and a subsidiary settled his lawsuit seeking disability benefits based on his inability to work during the pandemic because of his high risk for death or serious illness from Covid-19.

The settlement was announced Monday in an electronic order issued in the US District Court for the District of Oregon. The terms of the agreement are confidential, an attorney for the anesthesiologist said.

The anesthesiologist, Mark Mastrandrea, said he became disabled under the terms of his benefits plan in early March 2020, based on his high-risk status as a leukemia patient. These ...
