Dignity Health Settles Church Pension Suit That Went to SCOTUS

California hospital system Dignity Health settled a lawsuit claiming it misused a religious exemption in federal benefits law to underfund its pension plan by more than $1.8 billion.

The settlement, announced April 23, comes seven months after a federal judge declined to dismiss the case and two years after the U.S. Supreme Court weighed in on the dispute. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Dignity and other hospitals in 2017 while leaving several questions open for further litigation.

Details of the settlement will be made public by May 15, court papers indicate.
