The District of Massachusetts entered judgment for an MKS Instruments Inc. employee in his ERISA action challenging Unum’s decision denying him long-term disability benefits for his connective tissue disease, emphysema, chronic pain, and other ailments. The court determined that Unum’s final decision denying benefits to Dr. Rogers was arbitrary and capricious, because it was unsupported by substantial evidence and failed to provide a reasoned explanation for rejecting the consistent and credible opinions of his treating physicians.
