Blue Cross Illinois Discriminated Against Transgender Patients

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois violated federal anti-discrimination law by excluding gender-affirming medical services from coverage under its self-insured health plans, a federal court in Tacoma, Wash., ruled.

The court on Monday awarded summary judgment to a 17-year-old transgender boy and a certified class of plan participants who accused the company of violating the Affordable Care Act’s anti-discrimination provision.
