Judges Hammer Ross Over Westlaw Rivalry in AI Copyright Case (1)

Counsel for Ross Intelligence Inc. encountered a barrage of probing questions Thursday from Third Circuit judges who expressed skepticism over the company’s bid to overturn an AI training copyright fair use decision against the company in a case over copied Westlaw headnotes.

Although the attorney for Westlaw owner Thomson Reuters Enterprise Center GmbH also faced critical questions, the US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit panel jumped right into questions about the impact of Ross’ use of Westlaw headnotes on the market for the legal search engine’s work.
