Congress Fails to Avert Shutdown
Congress failed to fund the government before the midnight deadline, spelling uncertainty for the long-term funding for the beleaguered IRS.
The vote on a stopgap spending bill failed on a vote of 55 to 45 Tuesday evening, with Republicans falling short of the 60 senators needed to overcome a Democratic blockade.
The Treasury Department plans to fund the tax collection agency at least for the next week with roughly $22 billion in leftover money from Democrats’ 2022 tax-and-climate law, approved separately from the annual appropriations process.
