Ex-Moody’s Counsel Admits to Not Filing Taxes on $54 Million (1)

The former general counsel for Moody’s Corp. pleaded guilty to willfully failing to file federal income tax returns over four years, during which he earned more than $54 million, federal prosecutors said Friday.

John Goggins, who retired as Moody’s general counsel in September 2023, admitted to a magistrate judge in Newark that he had willfully failed to file from 2018-2021, the New Jersey US attorney’s office said.

Each charge carries a maximum possible penalty of one year in prison and a $100,000 fine, or twice the gross gain or loss from the offense, the announcement said. Any prison sentences ...
