John Howard, the director of the federal agency charged with conducting research and making recommendations for preventing work-related injuries, was among the Health and Human Services officials pushed out as part of widespread cuts at the agency, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.

Howard was serving his fourth term leading the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, part of HHS’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. His departure comes amid a workforce reduction that began Tuesday and hit multiple HHS agencies.
