Wisconsin Bans Local Labor, Employment Rules

Local jurisdictions in Wisconsin are barred from enacting laws that regulate workplace topics such as scheduling and benefits, occupational licensing, and asking job applicants about prior salary under a new state law.

Others state have pre-empted local labor and employment ordinances in recent years. Iowa enacted a statewide minimum wage law that pre-empted local ordinances and lowered the minimum wage in some counties. Minnesota’s governor vetoed a bill that would have blocked local wage, scheduling, and leave rules. Some states, such as Texas and Florida, enacted laws that focus on the ride-hailing industry.
