Public sector unions in Pennsylvania rolled back restrictions that had permitted members to resign and stop paying dues only during a narrow time window at the end of multiyear labor contracts, a conservative advocacy group said Oct. 8.
The Fairness Center had sued three unions representing state workers, alleging that restrictions on withdrawing from the unions violated the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark 2018 ruing in Janus v. AFSCME. The high court said in Janus that the First Amendment prohibits public sector unions from charging nonmembers mandatory fees for collective bargaining and other nonpolitical expenses.
