Michigan’s anti-discrimination law will now specifically protect workers from bias based on sexual orientation and gender identity, under legislation newly signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
The measure (Act No. 6 / SB 4) reinforces the protections, after the Michigan Supreme Court found last year that the state’s ban on sex-based discrimination included sexual orientation and gender identity. The state’s civil rights agency had been interpreting and applying the law that way since 2018.
