More than 250 West Coast port truckers have the right to form a union, according to a federal labor board official, potentially setting a favorable precedent for gig workers nationwide.

The decision from a National Labor Relations Board regional director affects truckers at Southern California ports and rail yards who work for STG Logistics and XPO Logistics Inc. The companies have said that the truckers are independent contractors and not full-time employees, making them ineligible to bargain collectively for better wages and working conditions.

The Teamsters, seeking to organize the workers, say the truckers have long been misclassified.
