Waste Management Pays $5.5M for Hiring Undocumented Workers

Garbage collection company Waste Management paid $5.5 million to the federal government, but won’t face prosecution, for illegally hiring undocumented workers over a 10-year period.

Waste Management Texas employed three managers in Houston from 2003 to April 2012 who actively encouraged and persuaded undocumented workers in the country illegally to work at the company’s Afton location in West Texas, according to an Aug. 29 statement from the U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of Texas. The allegations and agreement stem from a five-year investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations division.
