Virginia will launch a state-run paid family and medical leave program allowing workers to take off up to 12 weeks annually, after state lawmakers agreed with Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s (D) changes to the legislation.
The revised bill (HB 1207) emulates paid leave programs enacted by 13 other states plus Washington, D.C. It requires businesses to allow workers time off to care for a new child, tend to a worker’s or their family member’s serious medical condition, or to navigate issues related to military service or domestic violence.
