Virginia proposals to guarantee workers paid sick time and establish a paid family and medical leave program will depend on the legislature’s approval of revisions proposed by Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D).
Spanberger suggested changes to the paid family leave and sick time bills late Monday, her deadline for taking action on measures passed in the 2026 legislative session.
If lawmakers agree to her revisions, the state will join more than a dozen others guaranteeing workers both short-term and longer-term paid time off for covered reasons including navigating illness, family needs, military service, and domestic violence.
