Virginia Governor Seeks Delay of Minimum-Wage Hike

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) is looking to delay a pending minimum-wage hike in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.

Northam said Sunday that he’s looking to push back the effective date of a statewide pay-basement increase lawmakers set in H.B. 395 by four months, to May 1, 2021. Lawmakers will consider his proposed delay, along with postponing other labor and employment related changes, when they convene April 22.

The measure requires raising the minimum hourly wage statewide to $9.50 on Jan. 1, 2021, followed by annual increases until it reaches $12 in 2023. After that, the legislation calls for ...
