Use of Safety Leading Indicators Growing, National Safety Council Study Finds

The use of leading indicators to measure the effectiveness of safety and health programs is expected to grow, according to a new study released by the National Safety Council.

Corporate safety managers and others contacted for the study believe using leading indicators produces less dangerous workplaces, the report said.

However, establishing leading indicators takes more effort than tracking lagging indicators, such as injury rates summaries required by the Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the report added.

The report, “Transforming Environmental, Health and Safety Management Performance Through Leading Indicators,” was released Oct. 1 by the council’s Campbell Institute.
