USDA Sued Over Records Request for New Pork Line-Speed System

Public Citizen Inc. has filed a complaint against the Department of Agriculture over the agency’s rejection of a request for records of pork processing facilities that signed up to participate in a new system that allows plants to operate at greater speed.

The New Swine Inspection System eliminates slaughter-line speed caps for participating facilities and empowers plant employees to take on a greater share of inspection work, such as pre-inspection sorting. USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has said this will allow its inspectors to focus more time on tasks directly related to food safety and animal welfare.
