U.S. Had 22 Million Federal, State and Local Government Employees in 2012, Census Says

There were a total of about 22 million federal, state and local government employees in the U.S. in March 2012—including part-time employees—down 115,733 or 0.5 percent from March 2011, according to a Census Bureau report issued March 6.

There were 2.8 million federal government employees in 2012, a 2.2 percent decline from 2011, the report said.

There were 5.3 million state government employees in 2012, a 0.5 percent decline from 2011, and 14 million local government employees in 2012, about the same as 2011, it said.
