Unpaid Food Inspectors Thinking of Quitting, Safety Group Says

Meat and poultry inspectors who are required to work without pay are getting fed up with the ongoing partial government shutdown, according to a food safety advocacy group.

“We’re starting to hear some inspectors having a hard time putting gas into their cars to get to work,” Tony Corbo, a senior lobbyist for Food and Water Watch said Wednesday during at a Capitol Hill press conference Wednesday.

Some inspectors are “openly talking about quitting the agency,” he said.

Food safety advocates say they worry meat and poultry inspectors working without pay are beginning to get fed up.
