A state appellate court should compel the University of California system to drop restrictions for hiring undocumented students on campus, according to a new lawsuit brought by an immigrant alumnus and university lecturer.
The petition, filed Tuesday in the California Court of Appeal, First District but not yet entered in the docket, argues that the hiring policy violates the state’s Fair Employment and Housing Act and misinterprets requirements of federal immigration law.
It comes on the heels of a public campaign by student organizers that was ultimately rejected by University of California regents.
