University of California Researchers Vote to Form Union (1)

University of California researchers voted in favor of forming a union, according to a statement on the union’s website.

The union, known as Academic Researchers United, will represent about 5,000 researchers throughout the university system. It’s affiliated with United Auto Workers Local 5810, a UAW subsidiary that represents about 6,500 University of California postdoctoral scholars, according to the local’s website.

“This marks another major step towards beginning collective bargaining with UC administration,” the union said of the Nov. 26 vote.

University of California officials support the employees’ unionization efforts, university spokeswoman Dianne Klein told Bloomberg Law in an email. ...
