The University of California is exempt from state statutes and regulations governing wages and benefits for public employees, including minimum wage requirements, a state appellate court said Friday.
Guivini Gomez, who previously worked at the UC San Diego Medical Center, sued the University of California in 2019 on behalf of a proposed class of similarly situated hourly employees.
The university’s time keeping policy rounded hours down and automatically deducted 30-minute meal breaks, which meant Gomez and others weren’t receiving minimum wage, the complaint said.
