A union card-carrying airline pilot and a former CIA official are the Democrats vying for a chance to unseat high-profile Rep. Dave Brat in his central Virginia Republican stronghold district.

Unions tend to see Democrats as friendlier on their issues, such as raising minimum wages, protecting organizing rights, and watching trade pacts for their effects on U.S. jobs.
