The percentage of U.S. workers who were part of a labor union fell slightly in 2018 to 10.5 percent, according to data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics Jan. 18. Union workers made up 10.7 percent of the workforce in 2017.
Overall, union membership held about steady. Some unions lost membership, but the total numbers were about the same as in 2017. In both 2017 and 2018, rounded totals equated to about 7.2 million public sector union members and 7.6 million private sector union members.
