UCLA Gets Black Health-Care Worker’s Harassment Award Trimmed

The University of California doesn’t have to pay a former health-care worker lost wages because the jury that made the award found that she was fired for nondiscriminatory reasons, a state appellate court said Thursday.

Nicole Birden, a Black phlebotomist at the University of California Los Angeles Medical Center, said she was subjected to racial harassment by her coworkers, wrongfully terminated based on racial discrimination, and terminated in retaliation for complaining about discrimination.

According to Birden, coworkers made offensive comments about her in Spanish, and used racial slurs in casual conversation.
