Uber, Lyft Driver Pay Ordinance Vetoed by Minneapolis Mayor (1)

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey vetoed a proposal to set minimum pay rates for Lyft and Uber drivers amid industry opposition, blocking the city from becoming one of the very few US jurisdictions that regulate ride-share driver pay.

The ordinance, which the City Council passed on a 7-5 vote Aug. 17, would require ride-share companies to pay drivers at least $1.40 per mile and $0.51 per minute for time spent transporting a customer, and no less than $5 per ride. If the council attempts to override Frey’s (D) veto, it would need at least nine ‘yes’ votes to succeed.
