United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain asked members Tuesday to give him permission to call a strike next month if the union does not reach a deal with the Detroit automakers.
A strike authorization would give Fain more leverage in negotiations, which are growing increasingly tense with 30 days until the current contract expires. It wouldn’t guarantee a strike but give UAW leaders the option.
Fain plans to a hold a virtual town hall Tuesday night to criticize the companies for the lack of progress.
