Roughly 9,000 unionized Ford Motor Co. workers in Kentucky will go on strike Feb. 23 if key safety issues in a local contract are not resolved, the United Auto Workers said Friday.

UAW Local 862, which represents production and skilled trades workers at the Louisville factory, has struggled to reach an agreement with the company over health and safety issues such as minimum nurse staffing levels in the plant and other ergonomic safety issues, the union said in a statement, though a strike could be avoided if both sides reach a deal.
