Unions Lost Members in 2020, but Less So Amid Public Sector (3)

The number of U.S. workers who were members of labor unions fell by 2.2% last year as the coronavirus pandemic upended the economy, according to new data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Despite the loss of more than 300,000 members, the percentage of the overall workforce belonging to unions rose to 10.8%, up by half of a percentage point over the previous year—largely due to a loss of 9.6 million mostly non-union workers from the workforce during the coronavirus pandemic.
