Two Novelty, Production Union Officials In New Jersey Charged With Embezzlement

PHILADELPHIA—Two top officials of Novelty and Production Workers Local 148 were arrested Sept. 21 on charges of embezzling $375,000 from the union by awarding themselves unauthorized salary increases and bonuses, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey said in a statement (United States v. Arena).

In a 29-count indictment filed Sept. 1 in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey and unsealed Sept. 21, Stephen P. Arena, president of Local 148, and David J. Caivano, Local 148 recording secretary and secretary-treasurer, were charged with conspiracy and embezzlement of funds from Local 148. ...
