Trump Lawyers Pull SCOTUS Challenge to Federal Firing Freeze

May 27, 2025, 3:04 PM UTC

The Trump administration withdrew a request for the Supreme Court to block a lower court’s temporary order stopping the mass firing of federal workers, clearing the way for a similar challenge to proceed.

The withdrawn order asked the high court to stay a temporary restraining order issued May 9 by Judge Susan Illston of the US District Court for the Northern District of California, preventing Trump from carrying out sweeping government layoffs while unions challenge the firings.

Illston later granted a preliminary injunction that effectively extended her prohibition on the layoffs, which the Trump administration has appealed to the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

The case is Trump v. AFGE, U.S., No. 24A1106, petition withdrawn 5/23/25.
