A civil rights organization is suing the federal government for more transparency over the process it uses to deny fee waivers for low-income immigrants seeking work permits and other benefits.
US Citizenship and Immigration Services denies one in nine fee waiver applications, but hasn’t produced any information on how those requests are adjudicated, Lawyers for Civil Rights alleged in a complaint filed Tuesday.
The group submitted a Freedom of Information Act request for those records more than nine months ago, according to the lawsuit in the US District Court for the District of Massachusetts.
