The Messenger Settles Class Action Over Layoffs for $4.5 Million

JAF Communications Inc., owner of the now-defunct online news startup The Messenger, agreed to pay $4.5 million to settle a class action alleging it failed to give hundreds of workers adequate notice before shutting down operations last year.

In an April 25 filing, JAF and a former senior producer at the outlet who brought the class action asked Judge Margaret M. Garnett of the US District Court for the Southern District of New York to give preliminary approval to the settlement.
