Tesla, Other Green Carmakers Could See Labor Rules in California

Automobile manufacturers participating in California’s clean car rebate programs may need state certification showing they treat their workers fairly and responsibly.

If required, the certification could affect Ford Motor Co., General Motors Co., Nissan, Toyota, BMW Group, Fiat Chrysler, Tesla, and other companies that sell vehicles eligible for the rebates.

A provision in newly signed legislation allocating $140 million raised through the state’s carbon trading program for the rebates calls for state air quality regulators and labor officials to develop such certification procedures for a program that could begin July 1.
