Tennessee will close its Human Rights Commission and move its duties to the state’s attorney general, under legislation that Gov. Bill Lee (R) signed despite criticisms that it subjects civil rights enforcement to political preferences.
The legislation (HB 910) approved Monday calls for closing the commission by July 1 and creating a civil rights division within Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti’s office, tasked with enforcement of anti-discrimination laws covering employment, housing, and public accommodations.
