Surprise Billing Portal’s Sudden Reboot Irks Doctors, Insurers

The newly-reopened federal system that handles surprise billing payment disputes is still too inefficient to be effective, doctors say, while health insurers facing them in arbitration say the restart has left them scrambling to process a deluge of claims.

The Biden administration Oct. 6 reopened the independent dispute resolution (IDR) portal, which had been closed to new cases since August as a result of a decision by the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.
