Nelnet Servicing LLC and Edfinancial Services LLC will pay $10 million to settle a class action over a 2022 data breach that impacted more than 2.5 million student borrowers.
Despite a jurisdictional challenge from plaintiffs in a separate lawsuit over the same data breach, all of the requirements to preliminarily approve the settlement are satisfied, Judge John M. Gerrard of the US District Court for the District of Nebraska said. The Monday order granted preliminary approval to certify a class of all individuals whose personal information was compromised in the breach.
