Sterling Jewelers, DoorDash Face Employee Arbitration Actions

A class arbitration case between Sterling Jewelers and thousands of female retail employees, and the latest dispute between couriers and a gig economy company show that employers’ preferred method of dispute resolution can have downsides for them.

Arbitration Ruling: The Second Circuit ruled that the Sterling Jewelers must arbitrate with about 44,000 retail sales employees who claim the company paid the women less than men in similar jobs. The case, which could involve as many as 70,000 employees, has been ongoing for over a decade through multiple appeals court battles, Patrick Dorrian and Robert Iafolla report.
